Colombia's President Declares 'I Will Resort to Weapons Again' if United States Invades.

President Trump along with Colombia's president have intensified the rhetoric of their war of words, heightening tensions bilaterally after American military units targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He operates cocaine mills and production sites and his time is running out," Trump remarked.

Escalating Tensions coupled with Allegations

Addressing journalists on Sunday, the US president threatened similar armed intervention against Bogotá, asserting the country is “very sick too” and “run by an unwell individual who enjoys creating cocaine and selling it to America."

While Colombia remains the globe's biggest cocaine-producing country, no proof exists linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly connected to the trade.

A Deteriorating Relationship

Colombia has long been a staunch collaborator of the US in the struggle against drug trafficking and benefited from cross-party backing in Washington, yet ties have soured significantly after Trump came to office.

Colombia’s drug trade is predominantly run by illegal armed groups like one major cartel, the ELN guerrilla group and breakaway groups of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), a large contingent of whom laid down arms subsequent to a historic peace agreement.

Petro's Defiant Answer

In response to a query whether a military operation like that in Venezuela was a possibility against his country, Trump said: "I like the sound of that to me."

Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who demobilised in the 1990s, categorically refuted these allegations. "I am no an illegitimate leader and certainly not involved in narcotics," he declared.

"Trump speaks without knowledge. End the false accusations," he wrote in a message.

"Should American forces attack rural communities, they will transform into a multitude of fighters across the countryside. And should they arrest me, whom a significant portion of the population loves and respects, they will unleash the powerful force of the populace," he admonished.

From Insurgent to Statesman

The president dedicated a period in his early life as a member in the left-wing M-19 insurgent movement though it is believed to have ever participated in combat. After demobilizing, he was involved in writing the nation's constitution in the early 90s and later became a respected lawmaker. He served as mayor of the capital city before being elected the nation's highest office.

"I made a vow to abstain from using arms again ... but in defense of my country I would take up weapons once more," he vowed.

Reinforced Protection and Broad Rejection

Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the national leader's security detail had been reinforced.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have sided with Trump's stance, but voices spanning the ideological divide have denounced the possibility of a US attack targeting Colombia.

Bilateral and Financial Strains

Washington revoked the president's entry visa following he urged American soldiers to disobey unlawful commands. In October, it placed economic restrictions against the president, the first lady and several key allies.

Simultaneously as the US increased its forces near Venezuela and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces executed strikes against vessels in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
