Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Table

Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with rich lore, a diverse cast of characters, and a gripping narrative showcasing divine entities, evil spirits, and dark forces increasing in influence within the city.

Heads-up: Key plot points for the latest installment of the new season are included.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

Episode 3 finished on a dramatic pause and revealed the initial group of heroes who will separate from the central cast to undertake their independent quest, separate from the additional parties.

This warrior group features Teor (played by the voice actor), Thimble (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

With an extensive roster, it was evident from the start that maintaining everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

This explains, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Prelude, connecting the personal journeys before splitting into three separate parties: Fighters, Strategists, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who prefer a typically action-packed battle-oriented narrative style where diplomatic options are rare.

Upon first impression, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander might appear mismatched, but the events of the third episode show why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

First, the team understands precisely where to head next after a brutal initial meeting with the enemy group.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose passing kicked off the story’s plot—exploited the enemy for his selfish purposes, entering the secret base, attacking the rogue, and swiping all the powerful objects to auction.

The antagonist then paid off his debts and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, north of Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to exit the metropolitan area:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, wants revenge.
  • The adventurer knows the region and advises that it is a hostile location.
  • Tyranny and Wicander, having defied his house’s orders to eliminate the fighter and instead freed him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their status as important members in the influential clan could enable the group reach areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter pledged a eternal obligation to The savior for his deliverance and will now follow him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the rulers that govern the setting for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and The hero are known criminals.
  • Tyranny and Wicander turned against the influential house and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the family.

This leaves them few options but to travel to Timmony in search of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

Based on the recent installment’s post-show segment, we learn that the Soldiers table will not appear the following episode, leaving the other eight participants to round up the Explorers and Schemers parties.

Viewers can anticipate discovering which adventurers will be where in the season’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on next week.
