Heartbreaking Update on Cargo Plane Accident: Death Toll Climbs to 13

The number of lives lost due to the UPS cargo plane which burst into flames and plummeted has now risen to 13, as confirmed by official reports.

Official's Announcement

“On my way to the Union’s candlelight gathering, I learned of a 13th person that lost their life as a consequence of the plane crash,” expressed the city mayor in a social media post. “My thoughts are with the relatives, associates and peers of all who were lost in this week’s disaster. We will endure this collectively.”

Victims Identified

A statement from UPS named the flight crew aboard the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as Captain Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.

“Our sympathies go out to each UPSer who has been impacted and all in our local region – assisting you and guaranteeing you obtain the support and assistance you need is our focus,” the firm’s statement expressed.

Investigation Findings

Government officials revealed that the freight aircraft’s port side wing caught fire and an engine fell off soon after liftoff from the Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport, resulting in the plane to plummet and burst into a fireball.

The NTSB announced it is investigating the aircraft’s service record, that was in Texas for fixes a period before the incident.

Flight tracking information revealed the plane was on the runway in that location from 3 September to 18 October.

“We are aware that this plane was present in San Antonio,” stated an official on Thursday, without providing a precise time frame. “We will look at every piece of maintenance that was performed, even the San Antonio visit, right up to the time of the flight.”

Recovery of Critical Evidence

The pilot’s recorder and data recorder were retrieved, and the motor was located on the airfield.

The recorders – referred to as black boxes – were designed to withstand crash impacts and intense heat from blazes, and they appeared to be intact when located among the wreckage. Officials will reviewing data from the black boxes.

The plane’s concluding recorded information indicated an height of 475 feet and a velocity of that speed before the crash.

Service Background

According to FAA records from 18 September, a fracture on a part in the center wing fuel tank needed repairs.

Headquartered in Singapore ST Engineering, which stated it provides aircraft servicing for the company’s aircraft and runs a maintenance center in San Antonio, declined to comment, but expressed it would work closely when officials reached out it.

Operations Restart

At the same time, UPS Worldport services resumed Wednesday night with its overnight or nighttime procedure, official Jim Mayer confirmed. The three landing strips at the airport were also reopened.

The distribution hub in this location is the organization’s most significant. The center hires over 20,000 workers in the locality, handles three hundred trips each day and organizes over 400,000 items each hour.

Public Response

A candlelight vigil was organized on the late afternoon of 6 November by the local labor union, which represents employees at the aviation hub, the organization’s primary freight center.

The union chapter, which supports staff, started the memorial with a moment of silence at the evening hour, the approximate hour of the crash two days earlier.

“This tragedy was so unexpected, so unexpected,” the mayor told the crowd of two hundred. “No one had a chance to say goodbye to each of those who we have mourned.”
