"The amount of times on tour that fans approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the ultimate honor. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire others to make music."

The group are connecting from their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major milestone," says Alana. "However we're just grateful for the women that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The record emerged from a period of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The themes track breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them determining in real life who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to actively work on shutting out the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That recent confidence called for a new sound – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drums.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The trio's honesty shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating horror stories.

One man left Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Path

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an international audience.

Yet the band will consistently be their primary priority.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
