New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using these medications need to be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle changes.
